Since its founding, the Quartet has performed in all fifty states and appeared in the world’s leading concert halls. Its acclaimed performances of the complete string quartets of Beethoven, Schubert, Schoenberg, Bartók, and Mozart have earned widespread praise, and its celebrated recordings of the complete Mozart string quartets on a matched set of Stradivarius instruments are considered benchmarks of the repertoire.
Equally committed to innovation, the Quartet has collaborated with National Book Award-winning author Phil Klay, poet Tom Sleigh, novelist Salman Rushdie, and composer Paul Cantelon in multidisciplinary performances that combine music and literature. These imaginative projects have reinforced the Quartet’s reputation as an ensemble equally at home with the traditional repertoire and adventurous new artistic collaborations.
The Quartet has appeared on international radio and television broadcasts, toured extensively throughout Asia and South America, and performed with organizations including the New York City Ballet, the Montreal Symphony, and the Philadelphia Orchestra. Its extensive discography spans the Albany, CRI, MusicMasters, Nonesuch, RCA, and other labels, including the acclaimed recent release Schubert’s Echo.
Dedicated champions of contemporary music, the American String Quartet has premiered numerous works by leading composers, including George Tsontakis, Richard Danielpour, Robert Sirota, and Tobias Picker.
Formed at The Juilliard School, the Quartet launched its career by winning both the Coleman Competition and the Naumburg Award in the same year. It has served as resident quartet at the Aspen Music Festival since 1974 and at the Manhattan School of Music since 1984, while also holding residencies at the Taos School of Music, the Peabody Conservatory, and the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition.
